SilvIA Earth at the 2nd Annual Entrepreneurship Event of the Spanish Space Agency

The event, held on 29 April at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), brought Spain's space-entrepreneurship ecosystem together in Villanueva de la Cañada under the motto "Spain consolidates its leadership in space entrepreneurship".

On 29 April we had the chance to visit ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre in Madrid, for the 2nd Annual Entrepreneurship Event of the Spanish Space Agency. In just two editions, this event has become the leading meeting point for companies working with space technology and data in Spain.

A day with institutional weight

The event was attended by figures such as the Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, and the director of the Spanish Space Agency, Juan Carlos Cortés, as well as representatives from several regions. One of the central moments was the signing of the agreements by which Castilla-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia and the Basque Country join the ESA BIC incubator network, tangibly expanding opportunities for the sector's startups across the country.

The people driving Spain's space sector

The event brought together the leading companies and institutions of ESA's network in Spain. During the day, officials from regional administrations that are incorporating the space sector into their regional development strategies took the floor. We also met teams working on projects close to ours, with different approaches and a shared goal. Several lines of collaboration came out of those conversations that we will keep exploring in the coming months.

Predict, not detect: a message that fits

We confirmed that SilvIA's message fits the direction space entrepreneurship is taking in Spain. At SilvIA Earth we predict wildfire risk before ignition occurs, combining data from the Copernicus programme with artificial-intelligence models, and turn it into a monitoring and analysis tool that helps decide where to focus surveillance and resources. We do not build hardware or launch satellites. We turn data that already exists into useful decisions, and the sector's trend points that way: making the most of existing space infrastructure to solve operational needs.

We want to thank the Spanish Space Agency and ESA for organising it, and the ESAC team for hosting the event and opening their doors to us. We left with new ideas and relationships, with the feeling that the Spanish and European space sector is maturing at a good pace.
